The eastward enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004 brought the potential of great prosperity for the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries that would gain in freedom, democracy, and stability. With this extension, the Roma became the first and the largest minority in the new economic bloc, but without expecting anything. Roma currently living in appalling conditions, especially in the Balkans. According to the statistics of the European Social Forum, 79 percent of Roma in Kosovo, Romania, 69 percent and 61 percent in Serbia live below the poverty line. In addition to reporting under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), more than 50 percent of the Roma in Eastern Europe and the Balkans suffering from hunger, with 33 percent went to primary school, and 1 percent had completed secondary school. The Roma in Western Europe such as Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy or France to live in the majority in slums or in occupied houses. Often they are deported and expelled as the rest of society sees them as dirty, loud, lazy, and criminals. They are forced to live in the shadow of the civilized world, as it does not exist, and they suffer from discrimination if they do not allow them to exercise their basic rights such as eating, dressing, or clean. In addition to the survival problem of the Roma community with high unemployment, as they are not trained, and they have limited or no access to medical care. However, the main reason for not always any kind of a skilled work that is they are largely stigmatized by society and are thus excluded from the labor market. Another big problem for the Roma is the increasing extremism, they face an ethno-nationalist groups, for the most part in the CEE countries and the Balkans. In April 2009 there were violent attacks against Roma people in Prague, Czech Republic from the far right-wing extremists have been. In December 2007 there had been racially motivated attacks against Roma in Bratislava, Slovakia. In Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria, there were large demonstrations by ethnic nationalists to protest against the Roma. Not for their destruction in the concentration camps Jasenovac and Auschwitz by the Nazis and the Ustasha during the Second World War, which was apparently, many supporters in the European countries mentioned. To survive, the Roma, as part of a larger change in mentality in Europe, that they all recognized human rights. However, this requires the support of all European countries, the need for action on a local, national and pan-European level against discriminatory legal practices. In addition, all European countries need to promote access to housing, health, education and employment in the Roma communities. Perhaps then the Roma culture is encouraged, and perhaps then, the European Union shows the true face of the unit.
